Louis Neilson

Lecturer - Cape Town

Background:

  • I am an audio engineer & musician with a background in live music & theatre performances.
  • I started in music as part of the choir at St George's Cathedral at a very young age but eventually went on to be involved with more contemporary forms of music as a bassist principally (among other instruments), as a teenager.
  • This led me to study an HDip in Contemporary Music Performance (Focus: Bass) at The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance in London in 2010/2011.
  • I returned to Cape Town and re-entered the live music scene, performing and recording with various acts and artists. From 2014 to 2016 I earned a BA in Sound Production.
  • During this period I started working for and alongside many acclaimed South African engineers and producers, as well as doing productions of my own.
  • My greatest passion is the art of music, and how to turn artists' visions into the most effective product and experience it can be. I believe the role of the engineer in a production is to remove the technical element as an obstacle for the artist and to serve the speed of creativity & inspiration; I use this as a strong guiding principle in my teaching.
